High-Resolution Smoke Forecasting for the 2018 Camp Fire in California

Abstract Smoke from the 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California blanketed a large part of region for 2 weeks, creating poor air quality “unhealthy” range millions people. The NOAA Global System Laboratory’s HRRR-Smoke model was operating experimentally real time during Fire. Here, output is compared to surface observations PM 2.5 AQS and PurpleAir sensors as well satellite observation data. at 3-km resolution successfully simulated evolution plume initial phase fire (8–10 November 2018). Stereoscopic height retrievals were used compare with (for first time, authors’ knowledge), showing that able represent complex 3D distribution smoke over terrain. On 15–16 November, capture intensification pollution due high pressure system subsidence trapped close surface; however, later underpredicted levels likely underestimates radiative power (FRP) derived observations. intensity event resulting stagnation episodes make it an excellent test case predicting levels, which so this single usual anthropogenic sources became insignificant. implemented operationally NOAA/NCEP December 2020, now providing essential support forecasting impact U.S. wildfires continues increase scope magnitude.
